OUR DENTAL TEAM

Meet our dentists for nervous patients

Our dentists are experienced in helping nervous patients. Their patient, understanding approach puts communication and your comfort at the centre of your care.

You can meet the Deddington Dental team before your visit. When booking, tell us about your concerns or any preference for a dentist so we can discuss the available appointments.

CARE AT YOUR PACE

Care for nervous patients starts with listening

Dental anxiety can have many causes. For example, you may worry about discomfort or feel embarrassed about your teeth. A difficult past experience can also make visits harder. Tell us what matters to you so we can plan your care together.

We start by listening

First, we take time to understand your concerns. Tell us what worries you, what has helped before and what has made visits harder.

Clear explanations

We explain what we recommend and why, using straightforward language. You can ask questions before deciding on the next step.

A pace you can manage

We can plan treatment in stages. This means you do not have to tackle every dental concern at once.

Breaks and communication

For example, you can raise your hand to ask for a pause. Let us know if you need a moment or another explanation.

Support without pressure

A consultation helps you understand your options. We will discuss the proposed care and fees with you before you make a decision.

Extra support if needed

For some nervous patients, IV sedation offers extra support. If anxiety makes treatment difficult, we can assess whether it could help you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A first visit for nervous patients, step by step

Your first consultation helps us get to know you and understand your dental needs. Throughout the visit, we explain each step. Then we agree how to move forward.

1

Tell us about you

Talk through your concerns, medical history and any previous dental experiences. Bring a list of questions if that helps.

2

Understand your dental health

Next, your dentist explains the dental check and any X-rays or other tests you may need. Your concerns guide our approach.

3

Explore your options

We then discuss suitable treatments, support and likely costs. If needed, we can also talk about sedation.

4

Agree a manageable plan

Finally, we agree the next steps together. This includes the pace of your appointments and ways to help you feel comfortable.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

IV sedation for nervous patients

IV sedation is one of the tools we use to help nervous patients. It sits alongside good communication, trust and taking things at your pace.

What does IV sedation involve?

A sedative is given through a small tube in a vein in your hand or arm. It helps you feel relaxed and drowsy while remaining conscious and able to respond to the team. Memory of the appointment varies. Local anaesthetic is used where needed to numb the treatment area.

Before treatment, we assess your medical history, medicines and dental needs. We also explain benefits, risks and alternatives. During treatment and recovery, we monitor you.

Experienced sedation care

Our team has extensive experience providing dental treatment with IV sedation. We work with Dr Rob Endicott of UKSedation to support patients who need this additional care.

At your consultation, ask us whether sedation would suit you. We explain the arrangements before you decide.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

Practical tips for nervous patients

Before you arrive, tell us what you need. This helps us support nervous patients from the start.

Before your consultation

  • Tell reception that you feel nervous.
  • Write down your main worries and questions.
  • Bring an up-to-date list of your medicines.
  • Ask about any access or communication needs.
  • Let us know if you would like to discuss bringing someone for support.

If IV sedation is planned

Arrange a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you afterwards. Allow time for recovery and follow the team’s written instructions about eating, drinking, medicines and activities.

Sedation can affect judgement and coordination even when you feel well. Do not drive, work, drink alcohol or make important decisions for at least 24 hours. Confirm your arrangements with the sedation team.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Questions from nervous patients

Practical answers about dental anxiety, your first appointment and IV sedation.

Yes. Let us know when you book that it has been a while and that you feel anxious. Your first visit is a chance to talk about your concerns, assess your dental health and agree manageable next steps. You do not need to work out a treatment plan before contacting us.

First, we talk about your concerns and assess your needs. We explain the dental check and any tests, then discuss your options. We agree treatment with you. Booking a consultation does not commit you to a course of treatment.

Yes. Tell us what would help you feel more comfortable. We can agree a signal, such as raising your hand, so you can ask us to pause when it is safe to do so. We will discuss how to make appointments manageable for you.

No. Many nervous patients find that time, clear explanations and trust provide the support they need. However, IV sedation can offer extra help when it is suitable. We discuss your needs first.

IV sedation is conscious sedation. It helps you feel relaxed and drowsy, but you remain able to respond to the team. It is different from a general anaesthetic. You may remember less of the appointment, although this varies.

Where the treatment requires it, local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Sedation helps with anxiety; it does not replace local anaesthetic. Tell us if injections are a particular worry so we can discuss this before treatment.

No. We assess your medical history, medicines and treatment needs first. The team will explain the benefits, risks and alternatives, and whether IV sedation is appropriate for you. Please tell us about previous problems with sedation or anaesthesia.

You will need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you afterwards. Plan time to recover: do not drive, work, drink alcohol or make important decisions for at least 24 hours. Follow the specific written instructions from your sedation team.

Costs depend on the dental care you need and whether sedation is appropriate. We will explain the proposed treatment and fees before you decide. View our fee guide or contact us to discuss an initial consultation.
