Dental implants consist of three parts: the implant, an abutment, and a crown. During a small, straightforward surgical procedure, the dentist places the implant into the jaw bone. The implant replaces the missing tooth root, while the abutment and crown restore the visible part of the tooth in the mouth. Dental implants can support a single replacement tooth or several false teeth.
In some cases, the dentist can place dental implants at the same time as tooth removal, known as immediate replacement. More commonly, treatment takes place after a healing period of three to six months. With good care, dental implants can last for many years and often for life. They provide the closest possible replacement to your natural teeth.

ALTERNATIVES TO DENTAL IMPLANTS
Removable dentures (false teeth) can be metal-based or plastic and can look very natural. However, you must remove them, and most patients take them out at night.
Dental bridges replace missing teeth by fixing them to neighbouring healthy teeth. They provide a strong, fixed solution and work very well for the right cases. The main drawback is that the dentist has to use healthy teeth to support the bridge.

THE PROCESS
Before placing dental implants, the dentist assesses your mouth and discusses the most suitable treatment options with you. The dentist then takes an X-ray or Cone Beam CT scan to check the bone quality and identify important structures in the area.
The dentist usually places dental implants under local anaesthetic, and patients typically find the procedure painless. Then they lift the gum and place the implant securely into the jaw bone. They then reposition the gum over the implant to allow it to heal and integrate with the bone.
The implant remains in place for around three months while healing takes place, and the dentist reviews progress during this period.
The dentist then carries out a second, smaller procedure to uncover the implant and shape the gum around it. After this, the dentist takes an impression of your mouth so the crown can be made in our hi-tech laboratory. Once ready, the dentist securely fits the crown to the implant to restore your smile.
